A year of contracting…

Here is what I’ve learned after the past 12+ months of contracting for a large organization, and things I’m noticing in my new role… At least this is my gathering of thoughts based on my personal experiences.

Perhaps some friends can share similar (or different) experiences…

  1. People are nice, until you speak up on something you know, then all eyes turn evil…
  2. You will always be regarded as competition to current employees, no matter what level/type of work you come into.
  3. Your site manager often promises things they cannot deliver on, just to gain your trust and loyalty rather than being up-front about the contract timelines and expectations (many say “contract to hire” but don’t really mean it…rather than saying “6 month contract”).
  4. Your agency rep is earning a commission on you and you were their sale.  Don’t forget this when you speak with them about your work issues.
  5. Many companies do not know what they need, or want, for certain positions… and bring in consultants/contractors to fill a few gaps that could probably be covered if things were structured more effectively or managed a little more hands-on.
  6. No one at the company is really your friend. Trust no one and keep your head above water at all times.  It is important also to make yourself busy, find things to do, and keep quiet.  Stay out of the internal drama because it will not help you in any way.
  7. Consulting pays well, but the uncertainty will make you doubt yourself in many ways that you never thought before.
  8. Consulting pays well, so learn to STOP doubting yourself and rather market yourself for the next opportunity.  After all, YOU are the commodity here, so ENJOY THE RIDE! :-)
